Well, my wife's truck is now 10 years old almost to the DoM. There have been lumps under the paint of the hind-quarter quarter for a few years, and I have suspected the worst for a long time.
This morning, my suspicion was confirmed. I was hoping against hope that I could 'touch things up' a bit with a couple of rattle cans of rust reformer and factory paint. "Oh, no !", I thought to myself as I scraped away the top layer of paint. The Body-Side-Aperture sheet metal inner and outer are eaten through. Thanks go to the BSA inner sealer robot that probably skipped the expanding sealant between the BSA inner and BSA outer around the fuel filler neck opening allowing road salt infused water to run down and collect in the void causing the BSA panels to rust from the inside out. Yay techmology.
This will require major surgery at the hands of a trained auto-body surgeon. Do any of you Opponauts have an idea of how much this will cost ? $1000 ? $2000 ?
I can't stand to look at it, so I covered it up until I find a surgeon to fix it up...

Sorry I'm new here, what type of truck is it?

Sorry to hear it my friend, rust is always a major pita. If it is that bad on the surface, it's all over the bed of the truck, just can't see it yet. No way to tell how much it would be, but I would say north of 1500 probably. The cheaper route to take, might be to go try and find a used bed in the same color and swap them out.

2nd Gen Durango. The last of the Body On Frame SUV's from Chrysler, fraught with all of the baggage of a BoF truck.

The frame and chassis underneath is a rusty mess, but this and the driver's door (bottom hem flange sealer gap, I have been stalking junk yards for replacement) are the only rusty bits on the body. The BSA on the Durango is not swappable. I think this will need to be a proper cut, weld, paint job. I'm expecting quotes in the $2k range, so I have to decide if it is really worth it. I really don't feel like doing a fiberglass and Bondo job on it - no time or patience for that.

a) I know that feels and b) I've had a few tonight and I was just relieved that it wasn't a person with cancer. Seriously. Don't scare me like that.

Unless you plan on really keeping it for a while, I wouldn't do the full on reweld and all that stuff, you are spending a significant portion of what the car is worth just on a fix, but it's up to you my friend. Plus, who knows, the guys you go to talk to might have an alternative method to try. Either way though, good luck. And remember for the future, galvanization and underbody coating are your friends
